Seawastex®: the future of paddlesport gear

From 2026, we're introducing Seawastex® recycled nylon across a range of outerwear — turning discarded marine waste into premium jackets, trousers and drysuits. So what you wear on your next adventure can contribute to a global shift in the sustainability of garment manufacture.

The material

What is Seawastex®?

Seawastex® yarns are made from discarded fishing nets and marine nylon waste — materials that would otherwise pollute our oceans for decades. Through strategic partnerships with coastal governments, manufacturers, and specialist recyclers, these nets are collected, dismantled, cleaned, and repurposed into high-performance fabric.

Incentivized return schemes provide meaningful income for local fishing communities while ensuring a consistent, traceable supply of raw material. The result is a closed-loop system that benefits people, planet, and paddlers alike.

100% recycled face fabric

All Seawastex® face fabrics are made entirely from recovered marine nylon waste.

GRS certified

Meets the Global Recycled Standard for verified traceability and responsible sourcing.

Why it matters

A solution for insoluble waste

Every year, approximately 640,000 tonnes of fishing gear are abandoned at sea — a silent catastrophe contributing to the 12.7 million tonnes of marine debris entering our oceans. These ghost nets drift for decades, entangling wildlife and breaking down into microplastics. Seawastex® directly addresses this by turning that waste into something extraordinary.

640K

Tonnes of lost gear

Fishing gear abandoned at sea every year, threatening marine ecosystems worldwide.

49%

Carbon reduction

Recycled nylon cuts carbon emissions by up to 49% compared to virgin nylon production.

15%

Energy saved

Manufacturing Seawastex® requires 15% less energy than producing virgin nylon from scratch.

12.7M

Tonnes of debris

Marine debris entering the world's oceans each year.

Performance

Recycled, but never second best

Our commitment

Palm is committed to sustainability without sacrificing performance. Independent testing confirms that Seawastex® matches — and often exceeds — the durability, tensile strength, and abrasion resistance of virgin nylon.

Whether you're out on the water in challenging conditions or pushing your gear to its limits, Seawastex® delivers the confidence you expect from Palm Equipment.

Durability

Matches virgin nylon in long-term wear resistance and structural integrity.

Strength

High tensile strength ensures reliability in demanding paddlesport conditions.

Abrasion resistance

Tested against rocky shores, cockpit rims, and rough handling — Seawastex® delivers.

The process

From ocean waste to adventure gear

Step by step, making fishing nets into equipment.

1. Collection

Discarded fishing nets returned through local government and coastal recovery schemes.

2. Recycling

Advanced depolymerisation converts recovered nylon into raw material.

3. Fibre production

Caprolactam is spun into high-performance Seawastex® fibres.

4. Fabric weaving

Fibres become durable, waterproof technical fabrics.

5. Garment making

Palm makes the fabrics into jackets, drysuits, and trousers for paddlers.
